Director’s Welcome

The School of Letters and Sciences is a vibrant community of scholars committed to the principles of a New American University. We provide students access to the vast resources of Arizona State University, pursue excellence in all of our endeavors, and strive to make an impact on our local and global communities.

The faculty and staff of the school provide students with foundational offerings in the liberal arts on the Downtown Phoenix campus as well as the Polytechnic campus. We offer degree programs in history and culture; science, technology and society; literature, writing and film; technical communication; and behavioral health. In addition, we offer university-wide degrees in interdisciplinary studies, liberal studies and general studies. The degree programs fuse intellectual disciplines by transcending traditions and bringing together people, ideas and modes of inquiry.

Student success is our guiding principle. In the School of Letters and Sciences, we recognize that every student is an individual with unique talents, needs and aspirations. We strive to enable student success through superior instruction, the convergence of disciplinary knowledge, outcome-determined excellence, use-inspired scholarship, an ongoing embodiment of diversity, and inspired graduates.

We are in the midst of change and opportunity, and we look forward to the future.
