Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The faculty in Natural Sciences and Mathematics pursue innovative approaches to teaching lower- and upper-division courses that are essential to the preparation of students from a variety of science-related and non-science majors, including Nursing, Public Programs, and Journalism (’08). Our focus is on teaching, and we strive to develop classroom and laboratory experiences that allow students to explore important scientific and mathematical concepts. These concepts are presented through the most up-to-date teaching techniques that are based on research—our own and published—about student learning in these disciplines. We have found that students learn, and, more importantly retain, science and math concepts by being active, participatory explorers of current issues in chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Thus, our courses are designed for students to investigate and learn from their own strengths and weaknesses as they develop skills that will be useful in their future academic pursuits. We aim to help our students become informed citizens that are capable of critically examining scientific and mathematical information. This type of information fuels our latest technological advancements, many of which have been incorporated into our classrooms and laboratories as state-of-the-art teaching equipment. Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus currently offers a wide range of science and mathematics courses that are helping students hone the skills they will need to live their lives as scientifically and mathematically literate, informed world citizens.
